The Morphology of Crete & The people of the island : Crete is  the fifth largest island  in the Mediterranean sea  separating the Aegean from the Libyan Sea. The scenery is constantly changing. One place is harsh and barren, another place is wooded and gentle. Shores lined with forbidding rocks, often inaccessible, but also lots of endless sandy or pebbly beaches! A majestic large  mountain-chain  rise in its centre  running from the West to the East. In the West are the White mountains (Lefka Ori ): 2452m, in the center there is  the Mt Idi (Psiloritis): 2456m ( the mountain of Zeus), in the east Crete there is  the Mt. Dikti , 2148m. Its plateaus are split by deep gorges ending-up in fertile valleys . Old stone farmhouses, monasteries and villages perched on mountain ridges, castles and chapels forgotten on steep slopes are everywhere into the island of Crete .  The personality of Crete's  inhabitants was greatly affected  by the mountainous landscape. It was the distance between Crete and the mainland, as well as the fertility of its land,  which  have made the island independent for many centuries. Over the time, Crete developed a culture of its own, with distinct language and traditions.
