Most beaches in North Crete are deployed of sunbeds and umbrellas. The area of the beach for which the licence applies has to be kept clean. It is checked by the tourist police or the municipality of the area. Some of them they have really good facilities such as volley-ball and children palygrounds, showers , toilets etc.
Despite the mass tourism, still there are some pretty remote beaches where ther are no sunbeds by law. You are never obliged to pay there.
